An Interview with Abstract Artist Maisie Johnson
Whim’s Editor recently chatted to abstract artist Maisie Johnson, who is based in Moree in regional NSW, Australia. Learn about her exciting new collection, ‘Love Letters’, as well as her advice for those who dream of becoming an artist.
For those of us who aren’t familiar with your stunning work, how would you describe it to them ?
My biggest love when creating is working with colour. I would describe my work as super fun, contemporary, vibrant but also soft and dreamy if such a thing exists! I love being really free and organic with my initial marks onto the canvas and allowing those to lead the way for the rest of the work.
I understand you are from the regional town of Moree in northern NSW. What are some of your fondest memories growing up in this lovely town and how do you think it has shaped you creatively ?
I think my most favourite part of Moree is the people. Small country towns and good community spirit plus support go hand-in-hand and I just feel so lucky to have grown up in such a loving and supportive community. One of my fondest memories, and one that I know has without a doubt shaped me as a creative, were my art classes I used to take at the BAMM Gallery as a child. Afternoons spent in the beautiful studio space and garden with one of my now favourite local artists, Amanda Humphries, as our wonderful teacher. Inspiring me more and more each week.
I would also like to mention that I had and still have the most amazing family that has nurtured and supported my creativity and love of art for as long as I can remember. I couldn't have done any of this without them and their ongoing love and support!
I'm very excited for your new collection ‘Love Letters’. What was the inspiration behind the series?
Just a whole lot of love (as cheesy as it is) haha! This collection has been inspired by my current relationship actually (hence all the blue and green this time round!) and that beautifully natural feeling of falling hopelessly in love. Love between friends and family as well... Just those incredible connections that we all search for. The names of all of these works have also been inspired by all my favourite love songs and stories.
I was instantly drawn to your dreamy artworks on Instagram but noticed that you're also an incredibly talented weaver. Please tell us more about your woven art. What was it about this medium that you were drawn to?
I have always been a creative but just couldn't find something that felt like it was me. Drawing and painting never really used to be my strong point! I discovered the art of weaving when I was in my final year of school and was instantly hooked. The colours, the textures, the endless amazing materials available, including silks, wools — the list goes on! It was just something so different and I fell completely in love with the process and the craft.
What advice would you offer to young creatives hoping to hone their art skills and become an artist?
Just continue to create and be inspired by everything around you. Be open to continual change and growth in your practice. I have been working on my own practice and art business for the last 8 years and always feel like I am forever changing, going through different styles, colour phases.. It all adds to your skill set and experience.
Finally, where can our readers view more of your beautiful work?
I am in the process of creating a website (technolgy isn’t my strong suit), so at the moment all my work is showcased on my Instagram @mai.bymaisiejohnson.
We want to thank Maisie for taking the time to answer our questions and hope you have enjoyed learning more about her dreamy art!
