Featured Artist: Ania Gareeva
It's definitely not everyday that you come across an artist as talented as Ania Gareeva. Ania is a 20-year-old art student who was born in Russia but now resides in Sydney, Australia. Her artworks are often influenced by the history of Soviet film, Russian classical literature, family photographs and early memories. Ania's artist's statement explains: "Through symbols, references and allusions, her historical background constantly feeds into her art, which becomes a transmutation of personal and cultural contexts."
Ania is mostly a self-taught artist, however studying at the Sydney College of Art has taught her an array of new techniques, allowing her to experiment with her artworks and to develop an original style. Ania's works have been described as quirky and whimsical, and you will notice that the artist's practice includes everything from watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings, coloured pencil and ink drawings, digital illustrations, screenprints, etchings and photographs - Talk about multi-talented!
Ania's CV is equally as impressive, listing numerous achievements and exhibitions of her work such as: an exchange to Cardiff School of Art and Design, 2nd place in Leichhardt Council’s Wall2Wall Mural Competition (2012), and even two solo exhibitions of the artist's work in 2012 (to name only a few from a long list!)
