On Thursday night, Whim's Editor Melanie had the pleasure of attending Peggy M. Pullen's first solo exhibition at the Gaffa Gallery in Sydney. Titled 'Religious Undertones', the photographic series is based on Peggy's own previous experience in an oppressive religious group.
The photographer explained in an interview with catchpig.com, "[the series] speaks of the emotions and memories of that time and my journey after leaving. It is very personal and very raw.I find it extremely difficult to speak publicly or even in small groups about my emotions and thoughts. I also find it difficult to model or pose for other people, just as I sometimes find it strange to get others to do it for me. But when I am alone in my own space, with in my own thoughts, then I can express exactly what I want, and that is when the magic happens."
When you enter the room in which Peggy's photographs are being exhibited, there is a sense of awe and intrigue. Each image features a beautifully sun-drenched room, however they are all very unique, with each photograph depicting a different scene - whether it be the subject (the photographer herself) resting her hand gently on the pale walls whilst a crown of twigs adorns her hair, or her entire face and upper body hidden underneath a semi-sheer yellow cloth.
The good news is that the exhibition will be running at Gaffa Gallery until February 18th, and we highly recommend you attend the showcase to view the full 'Religious Undertones' series. Gaffa Gallery is located at 281 Clarence Street Sydney, and is only a very short walk from Town Hall Station.
