Eleni Nakopoulos' Solo Exhibition: 'Life Captured'

On Tuesday night, Whim's Editor had the pleasure of viewing the intriguing and awe-inspiring work of artist Eleni Nakopoulos at her solo exhibition opening night. Titled 'Life Captured' and showcased at The Depot Gallery II in Waterloo, the event attracted numerous viewers, all of whom were incredibly impressed by Eleni Nakopoulos' new body of work.
The event's media release explains: "Nakopoulos’ motivation for this new body of work was inspired by a visit to the zoo, which provoked an ethical question that is necessary and troubling. In an age where, we are seeing the destruction of so many species, through poaching and de-forestation, it seems ironic that what is naturally wild and free, may only survive in a caged or controlled environment. In this series she questions whether there could be another way. These new paintings reveal sinewy lines in vibrant colour, that twist and turn across the surface of shimmering tapestry-like images, creating an intriguing optical play between the subject and its environment. Refocus and suddenly, a wild cat is seen ready to pounce. Look again and you see the evidence of its captivity. In another, the vibrant coloured lines reveal a form more sinister; the confronting face of a monkey behind bars."
‘Life Captured’ is the culmination of 2 years of work by the Sydney visual artist, and we're sure you will agree that the body of work contains a strong message, whilst prompting us all to think about serious yet often ignored issues concerning the welfare of animals.
If you live in Sydney, then we highly recommend that you take some time out between now and Friday 14 March to view the series in person at The Depot Gallery II, 2 Dank Street Waterloo 2017. Entry is free and the gallery is open throughout the duration of the exhibition from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm each day. If you don't live in Sydney yet wish to find out more about the artist and her series 'Life Captured', then you can visit her website or read more about the event here
