There’s just something about a unique, elegant and perfectly hand-crafted hat that can suddenly transform an entire outfit and give someone an element of intrigue.
Having recently been introduced to hat design studio Justine Hats, we’ve instantly discovered flattering styles of headwear which balance delicately on the line between fashion, comfort and works of art.
Yael Cohen is the Owner and Designer of Justine Hats who creates these hand-crafted masterpieces using methods based upon the old art of traditional hat making. With a professional background that includes a BA in art and design and MA in cinema and film, Yael often looks to these two disciplines as an endless source of inspiration for her designs.
“I like to refer to a hat as a three-dimensional sculptural object that defines and characterizes the identity of the person wearing it… I design by walking around, looking around, watching, and feeling. Sometimes I feel like my thinking is like a drawing into my head,” she explains.
If 100% hand-crafted and unique designs weren’t already impressive enough, Yael also prides herself on using natural materials, wool, and various types of straw created by hand in her craft.
“It is very important for me to buy the materials from suppliers that work under the terms of fair trade and employment,” Yael states.
We’re delighted to not only introduce you to this fantastic label, but to also share with you some of the exquisite designs from Justine Hats’ latest A/W 2015 collection titled Positive Gold featured in the images above. The label also has a beautiful Summer hats range and you can see a preview of these designs below:
Yael explains: “The collection incorporates traditional hand crafting with modern techniques of processing various raw materials & prints. The collection is composed of six categories of hats & head accessories – felt hats, cocktail hats, velour hats, melusine hats, corduroy & leather hats, rain hats made of printed cotton.”
We love the fact that Yael likes to stay true to the simplicity and elegance of classic designs, whilst injecting her own “fun and cheeky” signature style. Perfectly sculpted hats surprise their audience with tufts of feathers while other styles contain fashionably unsymmetrical shapes made from fine straw.
While we believe there is a Justine Hats design to suit everyone, you’ll also be pleased to know that designer Yael can create custom hats by your preferred size or colour – Can it get any better than that?
We strongly encourage you to see more wonderful styles from this designer by visiting the Justine Hats website and Etsy online store. The brand also has a Facebook page and Instagram (@justinehats) which are both worth a follow!
