How to Embrace Your Inner Wanderlust on a Budget
Wanderlust; that sudden and deep desire to explore that great, big world out there and all of the beauty that it has to offer. It’s a feeling that we’ve all experienced from time to time, although some will admit to feeling it more than others. It’s easy to try and ward off this urge to travel and see new places, listing no time away from work and money as two major roadblocks to your deepest heart’s desires. Today I’m going to show you how you needn’t worry about such excuses, however, because embracing your inner wanderlust is cheaper and easier than you initially thought!
Start local:
It’s easy to think that in order to embrace your wanderlust, you have to pack your bags and book the first airplane ticket you can afford. But who says you have to take to the skies to experience great and interesting things? I love exploring my local area, as no matter how long I’ve been living there, I’m always sure to find amazing places or activities that I never knew existed so close by!
I recently downloaded an app called HeyLets (It’s FREE!) and was in awe of just how many fantastic experiences were almost at my doorstep. HeyLets can be described as a social city guide which is powered by locals and built on positivity. Thankfully there are no negative reviews to wade through on HeyLets, meaning that everything is an awesome recommendation. You can follow other users (a great way to keep up-to-date and share recommendations with your friends!) and when you see a place, event or activity that you want to refer back to, you can add it to your ‘wish list’.
I’m constantly discovering beautiful gardens or hidden little beaches in Sydney which are perfect for future photoshoots, so if you would like to check these out then I encourage you to download HeyLets and follow Whim (we can be found by searching for our email address: whim.online@gmail.com).
Or, you don’t even have to leave home:
Sometimes those feelings of wanderlust can be satisfied simply by:
- Looking through other traveller’s online photo journals
- Reading beautiful travel writing from authors such as Pico Iyer (the best!)
- Creating Pinterest boards or moodboards of the places you wish to visit
- Flipping through your favourite cuisine’s cookbook and creating something delicious.
Often, wanderlust and the desire to feel inspired and try something new go hand-in-hand. There are also a number of movies which will have you embracing your inner wanderlust. Here’s a small selection below:
- Eat Pray Love
- Into the Wild
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
- Under the Tuscan Sun
You can also makeover your space and surround yourself with things that either remind you of your own travels and adventures, or perhaps the exotic and faraway countries that you would one day like to travel to. I’m incredibly inspired by the English countryside (despite never having travelled there myself…yet!) so my workspace and bedroom is surrounded by woodland animals or object with a country cottage aesthetic.
There you have it! Above are just a few fun, affordable and easy ways in which you can start to embrace your inner wanderlust today. I’d also love to know, how do you satisfy your desire to travel and explore new places when you’re on a budget? Please feel free to share in the comments below! :)
