Music Review: "Master Drone" from The Unravelling

Musioc Review - 'Master Drone' from The Unravelling on WhimMagazine.com 1

With our first music review, you'd be forgiven for expecting a dainty, passionate and 'pretty-sounding' tune.

'Master Drone' from The Unravelling certainly packs a punch, but we can promise you that it is a powerful and passionate punch at that - even if this passion we mention has been described as "blood-thirsty" by Pure Grain Audio.

The Unravelling can be described as having a Rock, Art Industrial, Ambient, Metal, and Cinematic style of sound, making their songs the perfect thing to pump-out when you're going for a jog, craving an energetic road-trip song, or simply feeling a tad angsty (with lyrics like "deny the culture!")

Featuring Gustavo de Beauville in charge of instruments and Steve Moore on vocals (also penning the gutsy lyrics), this talented duo have been compared to bands such as Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Katatonia, and Faith No More.

The particular single we are reviewing today is "Master Drone" and it was released on July 8. The track begins with a soft hum of instrumentals, before a powerful guitar riff cuts over the top. Steve Moore's vocals (which, in the beginning of this song, can't help but remind us of Brian Molko's from Placebo) then erupt, gradually building in tempo.

What is interesting about this song is the frenzied music teamed with Moore's controlled, almost spoken vocals. My favourite part of the song is the part where Moore sings:

Singing the songs that everyone knows Dancing in time like a marionette Always at war with an unknown foe Paying off an inherited debt

His vocals change, and he chooses to sing this part a little softer. Not only are the lyrics brilliant, but this chorus is the part of the song which I find to be most catchy!

All in all, this is a gutsy song with a clear infusion of both rock and metal. Its message can be summed-up with the following lyrics: "You may be a Master Drone, But you're still under control."

If you like your music to pack a punch, or perhaps just feel like celebrating your rebellious spirit, then "Master Drone" is the song for you. Listen to the full track for free over on the band's Bandcamp page or follow The Unravelling on Facebook to keep updated with their latest news. You can also listen to the band's previously released track, "Move Forward Until You Are Dead Here" on YouTube. Enjoy!
