Music Review: "Self-Titled" from bitter's kiss
Chloe Baker and her father Michael make up the talented duo that is bitter's kiss. Based in New Jersey, this musical act features the stunning and sweet vocals of Chloe, who at such a young age, is turned on to "a much more profound reality than that which most of us face day to day".
bitter's kiss also recently released a music video for the track "The Rope", which you'll love - Check it out at the end of this post!
The album is a collection of songs which offer a diary of sorts, giving us insight into the mind and world of Chloe. One of the songs which particularly stood out for me was "Love Won't Make You Cry", a soothing song containing a gentle piano tune and Chloe's signature sweet vocals. Her voice instantly reminds me of other celebrated acts such as Sarah Blasko or Ellie Goulding.
Another track which I really enjoyed was "The Rope", as it had a soft guitar opening and overall was a dreamy and hypnotic song. Chloe's deep lyrics really illustrated her understanding of humans emotionally and overall it was like a beautiful lullaby. You just couldn't tire of hearing that voice!
"Waste Of It All" was another great track and it contained more of an upbeat and carnival-like beginning. Her voice has a youthful innocence about it, but her lyrics tell of a more mature singer, or someone who just 'gets it'. From this song, I understood that Chloe was simply a young dreamer in search of and hoping for a better tomorrow.
"No One Will" featured a more playful vibe, with its rhythmic guitar and catchy vocals. It was surprising however to notice the contrast between the cheerful beat and Chloe's melancholic and pessimistic lyrics, as she sings "No one will ever love me...no one will ever call me." Despite this, I can't help but feel as though the singer is having a little fun with this one.
And as for that music video I promised? Here it is below :)
These are just a few of the brilliant songs from this album, so if you'd like to hear more from the talented bitter's kiss, then you'll have to keep an eye out for the "Self-Titled" album! You can stream the songs mentioned above on SoundCloud however, and be sure to follow this musical duo on Facebook or on their website to keep updated with their work. Enjoy!
