Q: When did your love of fashion design first blossom?A: I have always had a fascination with porcelain dolls and playing dress up. It is a magical childhood experience to try on an outfit and become a new character. In my free time I enjoyed daydreaming and sketching regal designs of ornate dresses and shoes. Creativity was encouraged during my home education and I learned how to sew when I was very young. I was a very detail oriented child and would sew matching clothing for my dolls and myself. I still enjoy wearing my own clothing and am passionate about creating garments that empower women and transform them into the person they dream of being.

Q: How would you describe your fashion label, Xiaolin Design, in just three words?A: Mysterious, Romantic, Luxurious.

Q: We absolutely love your ethereal and other-worldly designs! When it comes to the design process, what inspires your creations the most?A: My fashion designs are strongly inspired by the beauty of nature. I spend a fair amount of time traveling and researching exotic plants and animals. I often use elements from nature to embellish my designs such as feathers or jewel beetle wings. My wardrobe is like a cabinet of curiosities. There is also an underlying Victorian influence in the cut and silhouette of my garments. The Victorian era fascinates me and my designs and photography are often inspired by gothic-romantic culture, art, and literature.

Q: How would you describe a typical day in the life of Julia?A: A good day starts with a hot cup of tea and macarons. I still personally sew each of my designs for boutiques across the US, so reproducing garments takes up most of my time. This includes pattern making, constructing new samples, and photographing the finished designs. Apart from my work as a designer, I enjoy playing the piano, pampering my spoiled siamese cat, and tasting new foods.

Q: Lastly, what do you hope to achieve with your fashion career in the not-too-distant future; Do you have any upcoming, exciting plans that you would like to share with us?A: I am hoping to expand the number of boutiques and retailers that carry my Xiaolin ready to wear line. Also, I have recently received a couple of invitations to showcase my designs in Paris during Paris Fashion Week. Releasing a line at Paris Fashion Week is a dream goal I set as a fashion designer and I am working towards creating an unforgettable runway show.
