Music Review: "Single Drops" from Luca Bash
Our latest music review looks at a unique EP from Pop / Rock / Funk talent Luca Bash titled "Single Drops".
With similarities between famous musicians such as Dave Matthews, Damien Rice, Nick Drake, and John Mayer, it's no wonder that I enjoyed this 5-piece EP from the Rome-based singer and song-writer.
With Luca Bash himself on acoustic guitar, rhythm guitar and vocals, and Giova Pes in charge of lead guitar, this is one duo who you'll want to remember!
Breaking onto the music scene as early as 2006, Luca had previously taken a break from the industry. In 2013 he was derailed by a debilitating motor bike accident which caused the musician to spend 5 days in a coma. Upon waking however, Luca explained that he had a "new sense for where he wanted his music to go and a much better understanding of the importance of quality recording."
The first track on the EP is titled 'Your Tomorrow' and Luca states that it is about a Mum telling "her life testament to her kid while he sleeps." It begins with a beautiful guitar riff, and Luca's vocals are surprisingly different to the sometimes raspy, almost spoken vocals we have come to expect from similar acts. There's a wisdom and deep emotion lying in his voice, as well as an honesty about life and passion for his music.
'Forever Like Asleep' is the next track and it contains a different rhythmic and funk-infused sound altogether. Of this track, Luca explains: "If the after-life were like an eternal dream… just like sleeping forever within your best dream."
'Dear John' follows on from this song, containing a catchy beat and soulful guitar riff, drawing the listener in straight away. This is a slightly more melancholic track with heartfelt lyrics, and all suddenly makes sense as soon as Luca reveals it is "a song dedicated to John Paul II from a songwriter with a 'godless soul'".
'Little Tale' is the second-last track on the EP and although it is quite similar to the song before it, it is somewhat slower, more heartfelt and emotive. Luca reaches some beautiful high notes, and the song ends with stunning vocals from the musician.
'Black Swan's Walls' is the final song, and Luca sheds some more light on the track, albeit in an ambiguous way: "Stuttering is cursed by the 'audience’s' smile, strengthening the black swan’s innermost defence walls". This song is so upbeat that it will get you moving, and it is a great way to end the EP.
Overall it is a great EP, and I highly recommend that you listen to it in full over on SoundCloud. You can also watch the music video for 'Your Tomorrow' on Youtube here, and please be sure to show Luca Bash some love by liking his Facebook page. Enjoy!
