Music Review: 'This Book Belongs To' from The Liquorsmiths

Music Review - This Book Belongs To from The Liquorsmiths on WhimMagazine.com 1With a distinct folk rock sound and great story-telling ability through their songs, The Liquorsmiths' new album won't disappoint.

Their most recent album is titled 'This Book Belongs To', words which already conjure nostalgia and memories of school books in my mind. Released through Inhesion Records, the album has been described as "six tracks of elegant and deeply engaging Wilco flavored Americana."

Hailing from San Diego, this three-piece are already proving to be extremely popular among the festival circuit. I recently listened to the latest album to review for Whim, and must say that I was impressed by the relaxed vibe and mixture of sounds.

The first track, 'Coy With Me', seemed to have a lot going on in it, combining great story-telling with an edgier and gutsy sound in other parts.

'Get Well Soon', on the other hand, was very catchy and overall had a positive nature. With softer and more sombre vocals, this one seemed to be more up my alley.

'Iris' Song' was lovely all-round and a lot more emotive than the previous two tracks. With a slower beginning and more melancholic (yet beautiful) sound, I couldn't help but be reminded of Jack's Mannequin (so naturally, loved it!).

Next came 'Thief', my absolute favourite song on the album and one which I'll probably have on repeat for the next week. It had a dreamy and hypnotic beginning and the soft, accompanying female vocals worked so well. Loved it!

'Devil I Do' had a chirpy and upbeat beginning, which contrasted with the tone of lyrics (such as "And I will destroy you" - intense!). For me, this was one of those songs you can listen to and imagine just how good it would be when performed live.

'Day By Day' was the final song on the album, ending it all with quite an easy-listening and relaxed folk rock vibe. The song does get a little gutsier towards the end and there were some interesting layers of vocals.

Overall this was a great album from The Liquorsmiths, and I encourage you to stream the preview track 'Get Well Soon' on SoundCloud. You can also find both The Liquorsmiths and Inhesion Records on Facebook by clicking on each. Enjoy!
