Q: When did you first begin your label, blaauw By Monica, and what first inspired you to do so?

A: I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. It all begun a few years back, I was working in fashion / retail and studying the trade, so with design in my blood and entrepreneurs running through my family, it was time to make something of all the hard work and so the journey began!

Q: How would you describe your label in just three words?

A: ~ Earth ~ Sea ~ Mango ~

Q: When it comes to your designs, what inspires your creativity the most?

A: I start with a fabric that catches my eye and the designs flow from there. Fabric manipulation is something I really enjoy doing especially 'natural dying’. Nature is my muse, of course I’m bias to Australia’s native fauna and the never ending coasts but I love to travel and capture the experience and essence of new places as well!

Q: We love your new Spring Summer 16 collection and lookbook! Please tell us a little about the experience you had whilst putting together this collection of beachwear?

A: My collections always portray my moods or reflect on my recent experiences. When I started getting inspired for the collection, I had recently been in Greece sailing around the islands with my family which was absolute bliss, there’s nothing better than spending Melbourne’s July in Europe. The blue and white print used on the bathers are so obvious! Everything is breezy, light and easy to chuck on when you’re heading to shore or about to jump into the deep blue sea. Creating this collection took me back to the feeling of the sun on my (very white) skin, the peaceful swims and the incredible views!

Q: What do you hope to achieve with your label in the not-too-distant future; Do you have any exciting, upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?

A: The environment is a big concern for me, we all know that changes have to be made and most of us are making small adjustments, but it puzzles me why we still go for the ‘cheaper option’ while I can understand the environmentally friendly products available are generally more expensive due to the smaller production runs and more costly to produce. 'The more we grow, the more we can achieve’, for example this season we have three different tops made of this divine fabric made up of cotton, bamboo and linen, while cotton can be wasteful of water, bamboo is a great component, it is a weed so there is no shortage and creates a strong and durable fabric.

In the near future we look forward to using hemp products, as well as providing larger cup sizes in our swimwear!
