Feature Friday: 'The Woodlands' by Anastasia of elliftheartist + Interview
Q: When did you first discover your love of photography?
A: I discovered my love for photography three years ago, whilst holidaying in Maui, Hawaii. I noticed that I couldn't stop taking photos and friends had told me that I had a knack for photography and should consider studying a course and make it happen as a career.
I would honestly say that my love for photography truly flourished mid July last year. I had no idea what I wanted to do as a photographer, I was half through 2015 and hadn't found my niche or certain style of photography. I almost gave up, until my boyfriend encouraged me to create photo shoots. It was when I was looking at re-touching tutorials on YouTube, I came across a workshop show featuring Fine Arts photographer, Brooke Shaden. I fell in love with her works, especially her levitation images. One night, I thought: "Let's try a levitation image!"
From then on, I have created many self portrait series, story telling through whimsical and surreal images. I love what I do! It's my way of expressing feelings, situations and releasing stories of my past, my experiences.
Q: What inspires your creativity the most?
A: My personal experiences, fairy tales, fashion, art, Rosie Hardy and Bella Kotak (Fine Art Photographers)
Q: Please tell us more about the experience you had whilst capturing these beautiful images?
A: I had planned The Woodlands series for awhile. It was always at the back of my mind, just had to find the time, dress and model to create the shoot. I've always wanted to shoot a series in the woods!
The concept is about self acceptance, embracing your beauty, inside and out, your heart space and knowing that the feeling of being lost doesn't last. You'll find your way. Whilst shooting the series, I realised how easy it was to direct and create more ideas using a model! Sabrine was amazing!
I wanted to show a whimsical, subdued mood to bring my concept to life. So every pose or a different location in the park has a story.
Q: What does an average day in the life of Anastasia look like?
A: I am either scouting new locations, seeking inspiration from fashion/art/music/books, planning the next image, sketching the shoot or shooting a new self portrait. Story telling all the time!
Q: What do you hope to achieve with your photography in the not-too-distant future; Do you have any exciting, upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?
A: To collaborate with creative artists/photographers and gain exposure as a fine arts/surreal photographer and story teller through more publications/online platforms.
I have an exhibition with The Brick Lane Gallery in London, UK next Wednesday night! My first international showing with other awesome photographers around the world! Upcoming plans? I am wanting to shoot a surreal fashion series. Keep your eyes peeled!
We want to thank Anastasia for taking the time to shed some light on her work and encourage you to check out her website or follow along on Facebook and Instagram. Enjoy!
