Photoshoot + Interview: 'Little Gull' by Katja Marr
As 2016 draws to a close – (eep!), we’re getting inspired by Katja Marr’s latest shoot, 'Little Gull' and its perfectly moody beach setting.
“It's about a doll who was lost at sea and washed up on a beach, far away from her home,” Katja explains. “I wanted to capture her melancholia and nostalgia, but also her journey towards a new beginning - almost like a transformation. I love to incorporate fashion into dream-like narratives and themes like this one.”
With flashes back to childhood ballet classes (legwarmers and white tights, anyone?) and sheer, delicate fabrics reminiscent of your first party dress, Katja’s shoot is the perfect picture of youth and innocence. A touch of playfulness is also thrown in with the addition of ruffles, gloves and leotards – all impeccably styled by Nastassja van der Merwe.
Katja often plays with fashion, nature and storytelling through her work, and the results are usually effortlessly cool. Her back catalogue features punk rock stylings in a grassy field (“Bound”) and a “Nymphet” in blue lippy and lingerie reclining in a rockpool.
Katja is based in Cape Town, South Africa. You can view more of her work here and on Instagram - @katjameow.
