Walk on the 'Styled Side': Creating Your Dream Walk-in Wardrobe

A walk-in wardrobe is the dream for many fashion lovers. You have somewhere to put all your clothes, shoes and accessories.

You can keep everything organized and even create a space to get dressed and put your makeup on. But most homes don't come with an already available walk-in closet. Even if they do, it won't necessarily be set up to your liking. You need to design it so that it meets your needs and provides you with a great interior space. Whether you already have a closet waiting for you or not, here's how you can make the most of it.

Create Your Space

If you're lucky, you already have a closet ready and waiting for you to walk-into it. But if you currently use just a small closet or wardrobe, you're going to need to find the space. There are a couple of things you could do. If you have a large bedroom, you could sacrifice space in there to wall off a closet. Or you could use another room or space in your home instead. Once you have the space you need, you should think about its interior. Should it flow with the design in the rest of your home?

Think Smartly About Storage

Of course, the main point of your closet is to store all your clothes and accessories. But you don't want to take a random or unplanned approach to putting storage in. You should think carefully about what you need to store and how you want to be able to view and select your clothes. Do you want everything hanging open or neatly tucked away behind doors? Will your shoes be lined up on shelves or do you want them on a rotating shelf so you can view one pair at a time? How will you store smaller items, from underwear to scarves?

Use Plenty of Lighting

You want to be able to see your clothes and accessories when you're in your closet. It's unlikely to have any windows, although you could put in a skylight. You will probably be mostly relying on artificial lighting, so it's important to get it right. LED lights are often best as they can be brighter and more efficient than other types. Bright LED strip lights are an excellent choice to add lighting under shelves and other places. Use spotlights for your overhead lights to bathe your closet in light.

Space to Get Ready

You also need somewhere to get dressed, and it's great if you can do that in your closet instead of the bedroom. You could give yourself somewhere to sit, as well as somewhere to put the clothes you have picked out. Don't forget a mirror so that you can check your outfit too. Another idea is to have a vanity so you can do your makeup, perhaps with a hair dryer or other appliances too.

A walk-in closet doesn't have to be a dream. If you have some space you can use, you can turn it into reality.
