Photoshoot + Interview: 'Through the Eyes of Winter' by Daiana Aquije

You can never have too much glitter, which is why we’re happy to be publishing Argentinian fashion photographer Daiana Aquije’s latest shoot, 'Through The Eyes of Winter.'

Aesthetically, Dai drew inspiration from the colours and brightness of snow, using glitter makeup and blue tones in the images to evoke the cold of winter, and traces that remain in the soles of our shoes until it finally disappears. We’re in love with the diamante choker and glitter heels showcased – in Australian summer at the Whim office, it’s the next best thing to snow.

Dai’s love of photography blossomed from a love of writing in her late teens. “Many times I can not convey in words what I feel ... but maybe I can show you what I see,” she says of an image’s ability to convey an experience.

Browsing Daiana’s portfolio is like flicking through a colour wheel, as she’s constantly challenging herself with new palettes and settings. Her work is always very clearly her own, featuring bright colours and lively, focused subjects.

Q: How did you become a photographer?

A: My first approach to photography was at 19 years old, until then i used to write a lot in my free time, but then I realized i could create an image from those texts, and that’s when i fell in love. At 20 I had my first Reflex and ever since I never gave up.

Q: What do you like about working as a creative in Argentina?

A: Argentina is a country with a great cultural diversity and although it is considered that we are still in the process of development, art is very naturalized and included in our way of life.It is very easy to be inspired because there are many musicians, poets, painters, and colleagues of whom I am learning.

We tend to be very warm and it is easy to organize meetings between makeup artists, hairstylists, producers and photographers to set up new projects or simply to meet while we share a dinner. Experiences that allow us to grow and continue to learn.

Q: I live in Australia and have never seen snow before! Do you think photography is important in sharing unique experiences like this - sharing the "feeling" of snow through your own interpretation of it?

A: Yes, I think that pictures are a very direct way of expressing a feeling, a thought, and that is what I love most about photography, many times I can not convey in words what I feel ... but maybe I can show you what I see.

Q: Your portfolio is full of unique and beautiful women. How do you choose models to work with?

A: I started using my sister as a model, and then continued with people I met on social networks: actresses, singers and even girls that have nothing to do with the environment. In the last time I started to photograph models with experience that belong to agencies, but I still shoot photos with girls who are not.

The first thing I look for are looks, there are very expressive looks. But I think that all people are particularly beautiful and photographic in different ways ... I also make portraits of the people I love, only those I publish in privacy.

Q: What are you working on next?

A: At the moment I'm looking for simpler photos and more natural models, trying to say goodbye to some old habits where I used to look for more fanciful aesthetics and more explicit characterizations.

For this I always count on the collaboration of makeup artists, hair stylists and producers, without them my work would not be the same.
