Photoshoot + Interview: 'Natasha' by Cass Michael Photography
We’re delighted to be showcasing “Natasha”, a stunning set of portraits, along with a chat with Cass Michael, the Melbourne-based photographer behind them.
“Natasha” is a fun, glamourous series of portraits, kicking off with a high-femme party look and finishing with a sexy, rock and roll edge (and an amazing fringed skirt!).
We’re blown away by the high drama makeup work on Natasha, and how makeup artist Amara Khan has incorporated everything we love about modern beauty trends into her final look – full brows, metallic lids, a healthy dose of shimmer and a contour that could cut steel! We’re also loving the contrast of the high-glam makeup and sequins against a lush natural setting – and how Cass captures the natural light to showcase Amara’s wonderful work.

Q: What initially drew you to photography?
A:
I've grown up in a family where there was always a camera around, my Dad studied photography and was constantly documenting my families lives throughout my childhood. When I was about 11 I got my first point and shoot and that turned into my first proper digital SLR when I was about 13 or 14. I've been in love with photography from an early age and went on to get both my Bachelors and then my Masters degrees in Photography. I love how photography captures moments, it takes one click to preserve a point in time to look back on for years to come.
Q: The background flora and foliage in this shoot is lovely - what goes into scouting a shoot location for you?
A:
I don't think location scouting has to be too complicated. I think that in every place there will always been great spots for photographs if you know where to look and what to look for. I generally try and find somewhere that matches the vibes of my shoot, where I know that there are some shady spots. I do all of my initial research online, looking up different locations with images. 'Natasha' was shot at Thames Barrier Park in London, which I chose for it's greenery but also for it's urban feel.
Q: What emotions or "vibes" were you aiming to convey through your "Natasha" shoot?
A:
I met Natasha when I was working at a bridal fashion show. I was so drawn to her over the other models and just adored her look. I knew I had to photograph her! We arranged to set up a shoot and found an Amara who is an incredible make up artist. I wanted the shoot to be all about Natasha, with soft and feminine vibes.
Q: We loved your photo set "5,487 Miles" on your website - what are some of the biggest differences you've encountered between shooting in London and California?
A:
Thank you! '5,487 Miles' was all shot on my Bronica SQA camera, which is medium format film. I loved photographing the project and didn't intentionally shoot to have matching comparison images - it just happened when I was going through all my negatives.
The biggest difference for me photographing in California was the the weather! It was so easy going out to shoot and knowing that I was going to consistently get good light. I love to travel and love photographing all over the world. I think, not just for photographers, that travel and experiencing living in different countries is so important. I'm actually now living and photographing in Melbourne which is amazing and I have a ton of new work out!
