Featured Artist: Tom Melsen
We love being introduced to new artists from all over the globe, so when the multi-talented Tom Melsen got in contact with us, we were mesmerized by his work. The up-and-coming artist from the Netherlands has quite a few exhibitions coming up, so why not host our very own little exhibition here on the Whim blog?
Tom Melsen's creativity isn't just contained to one medium. The talented artist enjoys painting, making collages, taking polaroid photographs and sprawling his poetry on images that are reminiscent of the Renaissance. His website explains: "His works are one of a kind, and have been called dramatic, brilliant, wonderful, intense, bold and in your face." One critic in particular has stated, "His paintings make a real statement. You seem to get the essence out of the subject; viewing his art is a very personal experience. This is what gives them much more value than an ordinary painting of nice flowers."
Tom's work serves to remind us of our own fragility and vulnerability, and each artwork (whether it be a collage, painting, photograph or poem) leaves the audience feeling enthralled. From his colourful and quirky collages to the muted and soft-focused polaroids, we think this artist certainly has a lot to be proud of.
