Recipe: Cake Pops
Today is a quirky new recipe featuring cake, chocolate and sugar stars. Sound good? Cake pops quickly rose into the food trends a while back, and it's no surprise either- cakes in the form of lollipops are not only very cute, they serve as a fun treat for parties and picnics.
After a bit of trial and error, using silicon cake pop moulds is the easiest way to get the perfect sphere shape, you simply have to bake a teaspoon of mixture into the moulds and bake.
As for decorations, you can let you imagination loose with sprinkles, chocolate and icing to create your perfect sweet treats. There really is no wrong way to do it- you could even colour the cake itself for a surprise centre or to match a party colour scheme!
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 oz/60 g self-raising flour
- 2 oz/60 g caster sugar
- 2 oz/60 g margarine
- 100g chocolate
- Sugar decorations
METHOD:
- Pre-heat the oven to 180C. Cream together the margarine and sugar until light and fluffy, before adding the egg a little at a time.
- Beat well then sift and fold in the flour. Fill the cake pop moulds just over halfway and bake for 10 minutes or until cooked. Pop out of the moulds and leave to cool.
- Melt some chocolate, and dip the end of each lolly stick into the chocolate before inserting into each cake pop ball (this helps the cake stay on the stick).
- Use a knife or spoon to cover the cake pops in the chocolate and decorate with sugar decorations, before leaving in the fridge or freezer until set.
