We've featured Crystal's brilliant photography on the Whim website before, so couldn't refuse to showcase a more personal series from the usually shy and quiet creative. 'Winter Abroad' tells the tale of Crystal's life in Canada after she moved there from Hong Kong to pursue her studies.

She explains: "The photos are for a postcard project that talks about my life studying abroad in Canada and how it relates with photography. It talks about how much I miss home and how I am looking forward to the future being a photographer. Because I am usually a quiet person, I always disappear from the crowd and am shy to talk to people. In six years of studying abroad (In Canada, from Hong Kong), learning a new culture and  photography, I have made many friends. It has forced me to get out, rather than living quietly. It has inspired me to set a few more goals, to have a little more passion, and to be a lot more brave and force myself to be more outgoing. But the photos that I shoot are more closer and more about myself."

Crystal revealed to us that she was particularly inspired by two beautiful quotes when working on her project:

  • "The future is like a blank page in a sketch book; Pure white. You can dream whatever you want, paint it in whatever colours you choose; I am going to paint my pages with photography."
  • "It's a different world with different people, memories can only be screened in silence with closed eyes. I am grateful that I can use photography to connect myself to the world."

We admire Crystal for finding the courage to represent her own voice through her work and strongly encourage you to check out more of her photography over on her Facebook page or Instagram (@misscrystal_T). Enjoy!
