How is everyone's Easter long weekend going? We continue with our exclusive interviews with the RAWards Sydney finalists here on the Whim website and this afternoon we delve into the free-spirited world of accessories label Spherule Designs.
Bronwyn Shipway is the Owner and Designer of Spherule Designs, as we as the recently-awarded RAW Sydney Accessories Designer of the Year and you can read an inspiring interview with her below!
.
Q: Congratulations on winning first place in the accessories design category! Please tell us, what have you loved the most about your RAW Sydney experience?A: I loved being involved in RAW Sydney as it provided me with an opportunity to focus on developing my ideas and then allowing me a friendly and vibrant forum in which to showcase them. It was also very inspiring to see the diversity of the other exhibitors, Sydney is truly a creative place. RAW is definitely a something that I think every new designer should get involved in.
Q: What was your initial reaction when you heard the news that you would go on to represent Sydney in your category?A: Absolute shock and such excitement! I never win anything and to know that I was representing my home town of Sydney in the National competition, it was a very special moment.
Q: When did you first discover your love of accessories design?A: I loved raiding my mother’s jewellery box when I was little… I still do on occasion when I go home. From when I was pintsize I have been fascinated by how people adorned themselves and why they chose certain jewellery pieces. I think it is so cool that something as simple as a small round bead or a polished piece of rock when combined in certain ways creates object of beauty. Although, I didn’t get serious about creating my own pieces until early 2014. I have loved jewellery and how people have adorned themselves since I can remember.
Q: What inspires your creativity the most?A: There are so many answers to that question… but at the moment, I would say that my focus is on landscapes in the Pilbara region. I’m up here on a contract with my day job. There is a brightness to the colours that you won’t see on the east coast. The sun bleaches everything but at dusk, the world turns black as the skies start to glow. It’s just a visual heaven!
Q: What do you hope to achieve with your accessories design career in the near future – are there any exciting, upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?A: In the near future I would like to develop a larger more complete collection inclusive of other accessories for Spherule Designs. I would also love the opportunity to collaborate with a fashion designer and create accessories for their next collection.Keep an eye out for Spherule Designs at The Makery in Sydney in the upcoming months.
