Recipe: Easy Black Forest Chocolate Mousse
Today's recipe is so luxurious you probably wouldn't believe me if I said there's only three ingredients in the chocolate mousse! Just some chocolate, sugar and an egg are needed to make these rich desserts - simple, right?
The method is for two portions, perfect for a date night, or can easily be doubled or tripled for family and friend gatherings. Topping the mousse with cream and cherries is always a winner, and goes down a treat for black forest lovers too! Here's how to make them:
INGREDIENTS:
85g/ 3oz dark chocolate, 1 large egg, 14g/ 0.5oz caster sugar, extra thick double cream, fresh cherries
METHOD:
- Break up the chocolate and place in a bowl over a saucepan half full of water, so that the water doesn't touch the bowl.
- Bring the water to the boil, then reduce to a low heat so that the chocolate melts slowly, occasionally stirring to ensure even heating.
- Once the chocolate has melted, stir well and leave to cool slightly for a few minutes.
- Meanwhile, separate the egg and whisk up the egg whites to form soft peaks, then add the sugar. Whisk again until the egg is glossy.
- Add the egg yolk into the chocolate, stir well.
- Use a metal spoon to fold in the egg whites carefully to retain the air bubbles.
- Spoon into ramekins or glasses, cover with cling film and put them in the fridge for at least 3 hours.
- Once set, add thick double cream or whipped cream onto the mousse and sprinkle with chocolate shavings (I just used a vegetable peeler on the side of a block of chocolate!)
- Top with cherries and serve with a bowl of even more cherries- they taste great dipped into the cream!
