Q: Hi Kira! Congratulations on your successful showcase at this year’s Fashfest! What did you love the most about this experience?

A: Fashfest was honestly one of the best fashion shows I’ve been a part of. The whole team was a delight to work with. Everyone was so supportive, accommodating, and extremely organised (which I can always use a little assistance in). It was just a really exceptional event. Plus it’s always such a thrill after months of work to see your designs on the runway. It’s such a surreal feeling.

Q: For those of our readers who might not be familiar with your label, how would you describe it to them in just 3 words?

A: Quirky, feminine, and flattering.

Q: We loved your ‘Unearth’ collection on the runway – there were even some amazing swimsuit designs! Please tell us about the inspiration behind this new collection?

A: That is so lovely to hear. ‘Unearth’ S/S 2016 is derived from all things Australia. From the unassuming, raw beauty of the country’s bushland, to an homage to 90s Aussie beach style, this collection appeals to the nostalgia within us all. It features my own original print designs. Fabrics include also include silk, scuba crepe, tassel lace, and cotton drill.

Q: What advice would you give to those who also want to pursue a career in fashion design and have their garments showcased at a prestigious event such as Fashfest?

A: A quote I try to live by is ‘Success is inevitable’. If you love what you do and you’re passionate about it, you will make it work. If it’s fashion you’re interested in, then learn everything you can about the design process and garment construction, whether through formal training or self-teaching. You can never be over-prepared.

It’s tricky to get noticed in an overcrowded industry like fashion, so to get your designs out there don’t be afraid to contact as many buyers, magazines and fashion shows as you can (the worst they can say is ‘no’). That’s how I ended up at FASHFEST.

Q: What do you hope the not-too-distant future holds for your label; do you have any exciting, upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?

A: World domination would be nice, but my main focus right now is building a brand I’m proud of. I would love more stockists across Australia and an ultimate goal would be to showcase a collection at MBFWA. The biggest hurdle as an emerging designer is to have a point of difference, to stand out and reach the people who want to wear your designs. I just want to make clothes that make people feel fabulous.
