Photoshoot + Interview: 'The Crown' by Emma Barrow
How elegant and stunning is this new series from the talented Emma Barrow, featuring crowns by Claire Austin?
We've been lucky enough in the past to share Emma's brilliant photography in Issue 12 of Whim Online Magazine and now we're stoked to share her latest photo shoot here on the blog!
Titled 'The Crown', this editorial was shot at Plymouth Hoe, taking inspiration from the mermaidesque backdrop, vintage, and of course, those beautiful shell-adorned crowns!
We've also got an exclusive interview with the South West England based photographer, so keep scrolling to find out more about her intriguing work!
Q: How did you get into photography as a career?
A: It all started from picking up photography as a subject in school. It was something I realised I enjoyed and decided to take it more seriously and pursued it at University. Immediately I was drawn to photographing people and (without realising) was photographing narrative which is where my fashion work started and turned into a career.
Q: This photoshoot is centred around the beautiful headpieces featured - how do your shoots usually find their inspiration?
A: For this shoot - I simply saw one of Claire Austin’s head pieces and ideas came pouring in for a shoot. My shoots usually find inspiration from the designs itself or a location.
Q: As well as putting together bridal shoots, you also photograph weddings. What's your favourite thing about capturing a couples' special day?
A: The whole day is one big shoot, so I love the various shots I can take from stills to portraits, to editorial and documentary. However, my favourite part of a wedding day to photograph is the Bride & Groom session. It’s what I enjoy the most as it’s close to my fashion work. It’s my one part of the day where I get to have just the bride and groom to myself to capture intimate and romantic editorial images in some amazing locations.
Q: What attracts you to a project?
A: Location, design, creatives, trends, seasonal - this all contributes to ideas and interest into a project.
Q: You're a vintage-inspired photographer - what's your favourite decade in history for bridal wear?
A: I am inspired by vintage but also all past and present trends. I think it’s important to look back on what has been done and put that into modern work. For bridal wear my favourite decade is the 50s as I feel fashion really took over in this decade to produce new and exciting trends.
