Have you moved house or are you settling into a new flat?

If so, you may be thinking about carrying out a makeover and putting your stamp on your new place. Before you get your old clothes on and dig out brushes and rollers, here are some steps to take that will help you bring your vision of a beautiful bedroom to life.

Deep cleaning

When you move into a new house or apartment, it’s always advisable to give it a thorough clean, especially if it has been empty for a while, or it’s an old property. It’s likely to be dusty, and there may even be unwanted pests hanging around. Get your rubber gloves out, rope in some friends, and give the house a good clean. It’s probably not how you want to spend the first day in your home, but you’ll feel so much better when it looks shiny and clean and smells lovely and fresh. If you do encounter signs of a pest infestation, such as droppings or small holes in the walls, don’t hesitate to get exterminators in. It’s best to sort these issues as quickly as possible.

Planning

Before you start decorating, plan ahead. Make sure you have a good idea of what you want to do with your new bedroom. Have a look at colour charts, and work out where you’re going to put your furniture, and how you’re going to present the room. Think about the style you want to go for, and how you’re going to make your vision a reality. If you’re struggling for inspiration, have a look online, read some blogs, and browse some magazines. Create a mood board with cuttings and printouts, and write down stockist details for pieces you come across.

Preparation

If you’re painting your bedroom walls, you need to prepare the surface first. If you lather paint straight onto the wall, you may get an uneven finish. Wipe down the walls, and use sanding paper to smooth any rough areas. Then apply a coat of primer. Once this has dried, you can start your first coat. Put dust sheets down to protect the floor and furniture. If you’re painting a large area, use a roller and then switch to a brush for the intricate details. Use masking tape around the ceiling and window frames to prevent paint to create smooth lines. Let the first coat dry completely before you apply a second coat. The number of layers you’ll need will depend on the paint you use, and the surface you’re covering. If the wall was a dark colour before, you may need three coats.

Adding homely touches

Once you’ve got your walls painted, and your furniture in place, you can start adding those all-important homely touches. Accessories and soft furnishings are an excellent way to personalise the space and make it more inviting. Plants, vases, candle holders and framed photos are perfect additions for the bedroom. Cushions, throws, and rugs create a cosy vibe. Use your accents to inject colour and emphasise the style and theme of the room.
