What is 'Vertical Interest' + How to Add it to the Exterior of your Home
Making changes in the home is something that we are encouraged to do on a semi-regular basis.
Whether it's to freshen up our living space, or to keep it competitive in terms of resale price, it's important we don't let it go stale. So we watch an awful lot of DIY shows and tear pages out of magazines, and we mull over ideas.
One thing that comes over with so many of these shows and articles is that they focus more inside the house. It makes sense - the interiors are where we spend most of our time, after all. However, bear in mind that the way most people observe your home is from the outside. This is a part of our home that can often go ignored.
With cabinets, wall art and fireplaces, our interiors already have what the experts call "vertical interest". If you're a gardener, you probably also have it in your flower beds. Planting taller flowers next to shorter ones creates a layered effect which is pleasing on the eye. But what about the outside of your house? Is it wrong - or right - on so many levels?
At Ground Level - Spruce Up Your Walls
In any home, there are little pieces all around the interior walls that draw the eye. Maybe they're drawing it to the pictures or ornaments. Maybe they draw it away from the unfixable dent in the wall. Either way, they draw it.
Adding some of those touches on the outside can be a way of bringing a new lease of life to the exterior of your home. At ground level, this can be something as simple as a house sign, or as grand as an exterior clock.
One Storey Up - Vertical Siding
Painting the exterior of the house is something experts recommend you do about once a decade. If you've used hardy exterior paint, it will weather the worst that Mother Nature has to throw at it. But most exterior paint doesn't look too thrilling.
Why not instead look for mobile scaffolding hire and erect some vertical siding on the outside, which can create a neater look? As a bonus, it will also provide greater protection from the elements than a coat of paint, and is easier to accessorize.
Between The Levels - Why Not Add A Pergola?
As well as a chic addition to any property, a pergola can be a highly practical addition especially in an area that gets a lot of sun. Ever wanted to sit outside in summer without having to put a hand in front of your face every few minutes? Need a cooler spot to sit in during barbecues and garden parties? You're in luck!
In comparison with a lot of exterior home additions, they are also fairly simple to construct. You may need some assistance with erecting the initial structure, but once it's up you'll be able to make the whole thing your own. Add a little bit of outdoor furniture, and you have the ideal outdoor entertaining space!
